Melanie's Secret Weapon

Oh my gosh.

I don't HAVE a secret weapon.

I was sure I'd find one by the time we got to February.

I thought it would be one of those paradigm shifting secret weapons that would alter the space time continuum. But, nope...

Lucky for me, Sheldon's got one:

Actually, he stole the theory from Penny. Penny's theory states that you'll never do anything great if you're too comfortable. That theory is my life in a nutshell. No matter what's happening, I'm always trying to squirm my way back to the spot where I'm so comfortable that I don't have to be productive. I crave homeostasis. I'll do almost anything to get back to homeostasis. So if I get my life crazy enough, I am uber-productive, in an attempt to get back to where I don't have to do anything.

That's my secret weapon.  I hope it helps.

Melanie's Newest Book List

Sometimes people ask me if I’ve read any good books lately. Or sometimes, I see a blog hop or a Top 10 list that I really want to join. Unfortunately all those things necessitate my being able to remember the books I’ve read once I shut the cover. How is possible that I can immerse myself so fully into a world that I wouldn’t hear a fire alarm blaring, but as soon as I read the words THE END, I forget that world ever existed?

So this year, I’m making a valiant effort to write every book I read down. I’ve got a new page up over at my personal blog, and I’m logging each book down as I go.

Because I’m such a live in the moment kind of gal, I can’t tell you if this is an accurate reflection of how much I normally read. It might be a little on the high side…or I might just be finally noticing that I read A LOT.

Sometimes I like to go over to my new page and reread the book titles, staring at them until I remember the story. It’s like getting a postcard from a place I love.

As an added benefit, instead of only sharing my TBR pile with you, I can actually share books I've already read with you!

Whenever Lara Jean wants to fall out of love, she writes a good-bye letter to the boy. One day, all her letters accidentally get mailed, including a letter to her sister's boyfriend.
Marguerite's parents have just invented the Firebird, which allows people to jump to parallel dimensions. When her father is murdered, she jumps from dimension to dimenstion, trying to catch up with the murderer.
Prophecy of the Six (Prophecy Breakers,#2)

Oh, you've heard enough about this one lately. But have you read it yet???
The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Trilogy, #1)
Even though she lives a life of luxury, Kestrel hates slavery. One day, for reasons she doesn't fully understand, she buys a slave names Arin.  I'm not really doing the plot justice, but it's good stuff. Trust me.
The Hunger Games
Catching Fire
Mockingjay
Yep. I reread them all. And I'm still angry about Finnick, but other than that I loved them dearly.

I am in love with Jennifer F. Smith's slow moving stories. Absolutely enthralled by them all. This is the story of Ellie, who gets an email meant for someone else, and decides to answer. Now imagine me smiling.

The Whispering Skull (Lockwood & Co., #2)
Book 2 in the Lockwood & Co. trilogy starts with Lucy continuing her partnership with Lockwood and George. George's skull is speaking to Lucy, an evil mirror has been stolen, and the ghosts are still causing mayhem. So much fun!

What books have you been reading lately?

Dreaming of Books Blog Hop

UPDATE: The contest is over, and we have a winner! If the rest of you are still interested in reading Alchemy, it's on sale at Amazon for 99c. Check it out here. And thank you all so much for commenting - it was so much fun to read what powers you all would pick.

*****

Hello and welcome to the Proser page for the Dreaming of Books blog hop!

Our blog is run by a group of five up and coming writers. Three of us are writing a YA series together. Our second book came out January 6 (YAY!), but we know most of you probably haven't heard of the series. So for the blog hop, we are giving away a signed paperback copy of the first book in the Prophecy Breakers series. Alchemy is a YA fantasy novel with mages, conspiracies, romance, and daring escapes.

We didn’t know how much we had to lose until we were infected with magic. Sam was in love, Juliette was the main caretaker for her siblings, and Ana and her dad planned the best parties in New York. But we lost it all when we were shipped to Chebeague, an exclusive school for newly infected mages.
Everyone knows about the mages, those who survive the infection and end up with magical abilities. We’ve seen the power of magic, the high-paying jobs, and the world fame. But we never saw the cost. We didn’t know we’d be forced to give up everything: sanity, family, even the right to talk on the phone.
We didn’t know mage was just another word for prisoner.

In our world, magic is a virus, a communicable disease that kills most of the people who come in contact with it. The few who survive gain their own magic, but are subject to constant struggles with insanity, and are barred from normal society for fear that they might infect and kill others. Mages develop one primary power and one secondary power, also called their major and their minor.

So for the giveaway, all you have to do is read the options, and tell us which of the six powers you would pick for your primary power, and what you would do with your new magic! Here are the six powers you can choose from:

Alchemy: The ability to change one material into another.
Pros: The most versatile and powerful magic.
Cons: Few mages who have this as their primary power live very long - either the magic takes too heavy of a toll on their physical body, or they're assassinated by other mages nervous about their abilities.

Prophecy: The ability to see the future.
Pros: Stock brokers and other powerful businesses are always looking for reliable prophecy mages to predict their prospects and the actions of their enemies.
Cons: Unreliable. This is the most common power, so you have to compete for those cushy jobs with dozens of other applicants. Also, no one likes that person who's making vague and confusing prophecies all the time.

Pushing: Similar to telepathy, the ability to move objects with your mind.
Pros:  Can be a very powerful ability, and has some of the lowest insanity rates. Never have to get up from the couch to get that bag of chips.
Cons: Most jobs involve heavy lifting and construction – not well paid. This is also a very common ability.

Temperature Control: The ability to control heat, particularly the manipulation of ice and fire.
Pros: Never need to carry matches on camping trips. Freeze ex-boyfriends to the ground with a flick of your fingers.
Cons: Extreme physical energy highs and lows, including frequent incidences of fever, coupled with extreme emotional highs and lows.

Super Senses: Increased sensitivity of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.
Pros: Hear anything anyone whispers about you. Super Sense mages make excellent spies.
Cons: Hear anything anyone whispers about you.  The sudden flood of sensory information can be overwhelming. More Super Sense mages succumb to insanity than any other type.

Healing: the ability to fix all injuries.
Pros: Be able to save the lives of all your mage friends.
Cons: This power can only be used on mages, because if you try to Heal a normal human, they'll just become infected with magic and (most likely) die.

Casting Prophecy of the Six as a (Disney) Movie

It's here! It's here! Prophecy of the Six is a thing!

If you haven't read Alchemy, Book One in the Prophecy Breakers Series is FREE!

Here's the link to the paperback
and kindle for Prophecy of the Six

and goodreads for good measure!

I'd like for you to meet the Six.

Here's the cast as represented by Disney Characters.

Sam:

Sam Ryan, the confident ladies man, (who is secretly a big goofball softy) would be played by Emperor Kuzco. Boom Baby!

Can't you just see him saying, "My face! My beautiful, beautiful, face!"???

Also because he makes a bit of a llama out of himself in this book, but then spends some time in the rain and learns how to be less selfish. It fits so well!

However, Emperor Kuzco doesn't have the ability to shoot flames from his fingers, so Sam totally wins and he wants everyone to know that of the two of them, Sam is the winner.

The winner who wins.

Ana:

Would be played by...Anna from Frozen.

She's enthusiastic, slightly unsure, feisty, powerful, inexperienced, throws a mean punch, and she has magical color changing hair.

Totally fits.

Ana also learns a few things about love, and that the cute boy who falls for you first might not be as trustworthy as say a goofy annoying boy who has been there the whole time.

I'm just saying, I think it's applicable.

Ana's magical powers have such a high cost (to use her magic, she has to lose her sanity) so in this book she is often the unmagical one next to her powerful friends. She kicks freaking butt though, and grows a ton. And is adorable.

Juliette:

Juliette would be played by Violet from The Incredibles.

She's way more powerful than she wants to be, and has a (not literal) force field of grumpiness for protecting herself. She learns the full scope of her power in this book, and starts to grow into it, She's a big sister who loves her head phones, and she has very dark shiny hair.

Fits!

Juliette is a caretaker, a protector, and she has her heart battered by a few boys in this book. But heaven help the villain or dumb boy who tries to force her to do anything she doesn't want to do.

Including falling in love.

Sebastian:

Seb would be played by Ron Stoppable from Kim Possible. He's a computer hacking, conspiracy believing sweetheart, who dances to a beat no one else can hear.

And that might not actually be there.

Seb gets put through the ringer in this book, seeing clues to this epic Prophecy of the Six, and seeing the bigger picture he that is affecting him and his friends, all while dealing with his Super Senses.

Seb is Sam's best friend, and not so secretly in love with Ana.

Zach:

As played by Tadashi Hamada from Big Hero Six. I think this fits. Zach is a leader. He's smart, and does things the right way. He doesn't really understand people who may break the rules, but he's easy going, kind, and likes to help people. He also is not a .gif, because Zach thinks gifs are for kids.

James:

James is a good guy, he just keeps secrets. A lot of secrets. Like he doesn't trust anyone to know anything about what he's doing, and what he knows. He is over protective, distrustful, judgmental, kind, and still there helping people even when people are being rude to him because he's keeping secrets from everyone. He doesn't trust anyone except himself.  Also he likes to surf.

He's Marlin, Nemo's dad in Finding Nemo.

~~
That's our Six. Meet them for real in Prophecy of the Six, now available HERE.

That's Sebastian on the cover. Aww... Poor Seb.

The Voice of Prophecy

The Dual Magics series are exciting high fantasy books. I read The Voice of Prophecy years ago, and can't wait to see what has happened to it after all this time. If you haven't yet read anything from the Dual Magics series, I am excited to introduce you to it. Meredith Mansfield is a talented writer, (and an amazing beta reader).

Two kinds of magic—each unknown to the users of the other—until they combine in one young man.

The Voice of Prophecy, the second book of the Dual Magics series, releases December 19th.
When the two kinds of magic combine in one person, unexpected things happen.
Sensing the presence of lions is one thing. Any member of the Lion Clan could do that. When Vatar sees the hunt through the eyes of one of the big cats—well, that’s something else altogether. And that’s only the beginning of the unusual manifestations of his magic.
When a mysterious voice only he can hear volunteers ancient wisdom, Vatar knows he’s in trouble. After enduring an Ordeal to prove he isn’t haunted by an Evil Spirit, Vatar thinks he may be possessed after all. Or losing his mind. Or cursed.
He must hide his Talent from his magic-fearing people or face consequences that don’t bear thinking about. But he has to control it in order to keep it secret. And now he’s not sure he can. It’s enough to make him want to give up on magic altogether.
But he’s going to need all his wits—and all the magic he can muster—to defeat those who want to use him and his unique abilities for their own ends.
The first book in the series, The Shaman’s Curse.

Vatar risked his life to try to save his friend--and failed. Now he has an implacable enemy in the vengeful shaman, who blames Vatar for the death of his only son. In his isolation, Vatar finds some comfort in daydreams. He knows the strange girl he sometimes imagines is just that--a dream. She’d better be.
Because, if she’s real things could get even worse for Vatar. The accepted magic of Vatar’s plains tribe wouldn’t enable him to see or communicate with a girl he doesn’t even know--or know where to find. That would be more like the magic passed down in certain, closely-guarded bloodlines among the ruling class of the coastal cities. And that’s bad. Very bad.
Unlike their own, Vatar’s people think the city magic is evil. If the shaman ever found out, it could be the weapon he needs to destroy Vatar. And yet, finding a way to accept the other side of his heritage may be the only way Vatar can ultimately defeat his enemy.

The two kinds of magic have always been totally separate. Until now.
You can find The Shaman's Curse here, and The Voice of Prophecy here. She's also written a novella from the same series called Becoming Lioness, which is free here.
Good luck Meredith!

Cover Reveal PROPHECY OF THE SIX!

I'm excited to host the Cover Reveal of Prophecy of the Six, Book Two of the Prophecy Breakers series by Sheena Boekweg, Melanie Crouse, and Sabrina West. The cover was designed by Darren Boekweg of Boekweg Books Publishing and Cover Design.

About Prophecy of the Six

We didn't know how much we had to gain by being infected with magic. We found a purpose, we found a destiny, and we found each other.

But California isn’t the new start we were promised. Dr. Child may be gone, but now we must face a military school, dangerous secrets, and a prophecy that has half the country wanting us dead. When the line between enemies and allies blurs, Sam, Juliette, Ana and I need to choose between love and sanity, between magic and survival.

Paradise has a cost. When the authorities are suddenly giving you whatever you want, they’re going to demand everything in return. And that’s a price not all of us are strong enough to pay.
Freedom feels like safety, but it’s not. There are no walls here. No place they won’t be coming for us.

No place we won’t destroy.

Work In Progress - Melanie

My friend Irene is doing Nanowrimo this year.

http://inkygirl.com

I've got lots of friends doing Nanowrimo actually , but unlike the rest of them, I know Irene in real life. We stood in the corridor of the church after an activity on Wednesday, and she told me about the book she's been writing. I hope she doesn't mind if I tell you that it's got a raccoon in it. A cute raccoon who pops out and chitters whenever she's at a loss to know what to have happen next.

We smiled nostalgically as I regaled her with stories about all the times I've used a shovel to kill someone, and how fun it is to try to make the murder so natural that no one says "Ah! The Travelling Shovel of Death." Talk about pulling people out of the story, right?

As we spoke, people regarded us with wide, wide eyes, and stayed as far away as possible. Good times.

But I know you're dying to know the status of my work in progress. I can hardly blame you. Today is our deadline to finish Editing. From here on out, we're calling it Copy Editing.

Sheena, Sabrina and I have got a new title. We've got a gorgeous cover, which we will showcase in early December--I think December 8th. We've got a release date: January 6.  It's all exciting and stressful and not nearly as shiny as writing about chittering raccoons.

Here is an excerpt of one of my favorite scenes from the beginning of the book. It's a little hard to find scenes that don't contain major spoilers, but I did my best. In our book, Juliette, Sam, Ana and Company have been sent from Maine clear across the country to military school in California. In this scene, Ana is making some new friends, and getting a new nickname:

"You've got to use your imagination," Chad said, and I nodded. Two other guys had joined our group, and we were standing on the beach, looking out at the ocean. The sun had burned off the fog, and the day was sunny and bright. Chad gestured to include the whole ocean.
"The first time Suzi brought me here, there was a huge flock of pelicans. How many do you think, Suz?" he called out to her, and she answered his question as though she'd heard every word he'd said.
"Thirty, maybe?"
"No way," Chad said. "At least 50. And some other kind of little bird, hundreds of those. Right, babe?"
"Definitely hundreds," she said, and continued her conversation with the other guys as though she hadn't been interrupted.
"Now close your eyes and imagine those pelicans flapping their wings up, up, up." Chad flapped his arms in demonstration. "And then, when they get to a certain height, they hover for a minute, and then..." He grabbed my arm and pointed out to the sky above the ocean. "They dive. They tuck their wings right in and freefall. Boom." He slapped his hands together and looked at me with wide, impressed eyes. "Over and over again. Like the coolest party ever."
I made the appropriate "Woah" expression, and he continued. "Then they come up out of the water and the little birds attack them."
"Oh. Poor pelicans," I said, and Chad nodded solemnly.
"But then they do it all over again. Dozens of pelicans divebombing the water. Lucky pelicans," he said. "And that's when Suzi had her genius idea. Suzi!" he called, and Suzi jogged up to us, wiping her hands on her legs.
"Are you ready?" she asked me. I stared at her, confused.
"For what?"
"To be a pelican," Chad said, grinning maniacally.

I can't even express how amazing it is to stand on the beach and have a Pusher lift me into the air and out over the ocean. Terrifying? Yes. But it's a great way to take my mind off my problems. And then they let go. I tried to freefall without screaming, but it was physically impossible to contain that much joy and anticipation. Because right before I hit the water, Suzi grabbed me in a cloud of air again, and lifted me back up, squealing with delight and terror. Eventually it was their turn to Push each other into the air, and I lay on my back and listened to the waves and their loud laughter. It was nearly a perfect moment.
I felt a twinge of guilt when I lied to my new friends about my primary power being Prophecy. Suzi smiled and shook her head thoughtfully. "It's always the one you'd never suspect," she said, and Chad laughed and agreed.
"I dare you to land in the water, Daredevil," he said.
"I don't even know how deep it is," I said. "And it's cold."
"But you're the Daredevil," he said. "And we won't let you crash into the bottom. Scouts honor."
I was already striding toward my launching spot. "Divebomb!" Chad shouted as Suzi lifted me into the air. I shivered with anticipation. As I began my freefall, I twisted into a dive. The water wasn't as cold as I'd expected, but that was probably the shock. Suzi slowed my impact at the last moment, which was a good thing, because I think I brushed the ocean floor as I turned and pushed for the surface. At the very least, I hoped I'd just cemented my new nickname. And that maybe they'd let me do it one more time.

Melanie’s Winter Reading List

I've been going through a reading slump. For months now, every book I've picked up has lacked that certain something. The best I can say is that I was interested enough to skim to the end, but most often I just forgot about it until I got a notice from the library saying it was due. But, at Sheena’s encouragement, I picked up The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, and I finished it! No skimming involved. It was a lovely, lovely book that reminded me that books don’t always need explosions to be wonderful. (They do, however, need to be in the past tense, but that’s a pet peeve for another blog post.) I hurried to my library’s web site and reserved The Geography of You and Me, which is another book by Jennifer E. Smith.

And that was when I remembered that sometimes authors I like write new books. And that those books might help break me free of my reading slump. A smidgen of research later, and I had a brand new TBR pile. I hope you like it.

Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers

Annith has watched her gifted sisters at the convent come and go, carrying out their dark dealings in the name of St. Mortain, patiently awaiting her own turn to serve Death. But her worst fears are realized when she discovers she is being groomed by the abbess as a Seeress, to be forever sequestered in the rock and stone womb of the convent. Feeling sorely betrayed, Annith decides to strike out on her own. She has spent her whole life training to be an assassin. Just because the convent has changed its mind, doesn’t mean she has.

Mortal Heart came out 3 DAYS AGO! I spent my whole fall not eagerly anticipating this book. What a waste. If you haven’t read His Fair Assassins Trilogy, you should. This is the final book in the series.

The Young Elites by Marie Lu

A brand new series by Marie Lu.
Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss

Yay! Auri is one of my favorites. I’m so glad he wrote a “short” story about her. (At 176 pages, it’s hardly a novelette, but it is short by Patrick Rothfuss’s standards.)

Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place.
Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries.
The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes. And it gives the reader a chance to learn things that only Auri knows....
In this book, Patrick Rothfuss brings us into the world of one of The Kingkiller Chronicle’s most enigmatic characters. Full of secrets and mysteries, The Slow Regard of Silent Things is the story of a broken girl trying to live in a broken world.

Earth Awakens by Orson Scott Card

This is the third book in the First Formic War series, the prequel to Ender’s Game. It is the story of Mazer Rakham and the rest of Earth as they meet the Buggers for the first time. If you are an Ender's Game fan, you've got to read these. If not, you can probably skip them.

Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

I’m late on this one! Book 3 is already out, and I’ve never read book 2. Ana and the French Kiss is book 1, and Isla and the Happily Ever After is the last book in the series.

Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion...she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit—more sparkly, more fun, more wild—the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood.

When Cricket—a gifted inventor—steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.

The Whispering Skull by Jonathon Stroud

This is the sequel to the Screaming Staircase

In the six months since Anthony, Lucy, and George survived a night in the most haunted house in England, Lockwood & Co. hasn't made much progress. Quill Kipps and his team of Fittes agents keep swooping in on Lockwood's investigations. Finally, in a fit of anger, Anthony challenges his rival to a contest: the next time the two agencies compete on a job, the losing side will have to admit defeat in the Times newspaper.

Things look up when a new client, Mr. Saunders, hires Lockwood & Co. to be present at the excavation of Edmund Bickerstaff, a Victorian doctor who reportedly tried to communicate with the dead. Saunders needs the coffin sealed with silver to prevent any supernatural trouble. All goes well-until George's curiosity attracts a horrible phantom.

Back home at Portland Row, Lockwood accuses George of making too many careless mistakes. Lucy is distracted by urgent whispers coming from the skull in the ghost jar. Then the team is summoned to DEPRAC headquarters. Kipps is there too, much to Lockwood's annoyance. Bickerstaff's coffin was raided and a strange glass object buried with the corpse has vanished. Inspector Barnes believes the relic to be highly dangerous, and he wants it found.

The Eye of Minds by James Dashner

Michael is a gamer. And like most gamers, he almost spends more time on the VirtNet than in the actual world. The VirtNet offers total mind and body immersion, and the more hacking skills you have, the more fun. Why bother following the rules when most of them are dumb, anyway?
But some rules were made for a reason. Some technology is too dangerous to fool with. And one gamer has been doing exactly that, with murderous results.
The government knows that to catch a hacker, you need a hacker. And they’ve been watching Michael. If he accepts their challenge, Michael will need to go off the VirtNet grid to the back alleys and corners of the system human eyes have never seen—and there’s the possibility that the line between game and reality will be blurred forever.

Catalyst by SJ Kincaid

This is the third book in the Insignia series, a series I found completely by happenstance. But I love it.
S. J. Kincaid has created a fascinating dystopian world for Insignia, her futuristic science-fiction adventure series perfect for fans of Ender's Game. Earth is in the middle of WWIII, battling to determine which governments and corporations will control the resources of the solar system.
Teen Tom Raines grew up with nothing, some days without even a roof over his head. Then his exceptional gaming skills earned him a spot in the Intrasolar Forces, the country's elite military training program, and his life completely changed. Now, in Catalyst, the explosive series conclusion, dangerous changes have come to the Pentagonal Spire, where Tom and his friends train. When a mysterious figure starts fighting against the evil corporations' horrifying plans, but with methods Tom finds shocking, he must decide which side he's on.
With slim odds of success, is it even worth the fight?

Trust Me, I’m Lying by Mary Elizabeth Summer

I’ve never read anything by Mary Elizabeth Summer, but goodreads said that if I liked the Heist Society series, I might like this one. So I’m excited, because I LOVED the Heist Society series.

What books are you looking forward to reading?
