500 Billion Words

I have been doing my own version of an outline, and getting a sense of my characters for the NaNoWriMo story I'm writing next month (I've changed stories 3 or 4 times in the last 7 days) and to top it all off, I've got family visiting from out of town.  So while I'd love to write an elegant, lengthy post about the pros and cons of outlining, it's not going to happen.  In place of that, here are some links that put into words the gist of what's been on my mind this week.  Hope you enjoy!

The Writing Place: Prose and Cons of Outlining a Story

Writer Revealed: To Outline or Not

The last thing I want to share with you is another TED talk, one that I really enjoyed when I first came across it.  You've probably already seen it, but for those that haven't, here is a glimpse at what we've learned from 5 million books.

Have a great week everyone!

  1. I loved that TED. Those guys are so funny, and what they are doing with written history is really fascinating. I've never even heard of culturomics.

    Thanks for the links.

    1. My mother-in-law was trying to make chicken and dumplings, but she kept having to stop so she could stand over my shoulder and watch the video when I tested the link. By the end, all the adults in the house were laughing. Glad you enjoyed it, too!

  2. I'm in! With Nanowrimo, that is. I get a fluttery, panicking feeling about it still, because I'm not really coping well with my current life's craziness. Still, your enthusiasm is contagious, and I need the jump start. I've figured out a way to make it (mostly) not cheating...I'm starting the novel from scratch, from a different character's point of view. Thanks for the links about outlining--I'm a believer in flexible outlining, but I need a refresher course.

    1. Eek! I'm so glad to have another person I know doing NaNo. I think that brings the count up to 5. I am really excited, and yes, a little panicky, too. Can't wait to see how it goes. Keep me posted, and good luck!
