You Take the Wri Road, and I'll Take the Lo Road...

...and I'll get to Scotla--

Ahem.

It's near the end of October. The emails are pinging. My friends(Melanie's post) (Trisha's post) are volunteering for NaNoWriMo, and I've got a story idea bouncing around in my skull. I could do it, I tell myself, I could write another novel in a month.

No. Life shakes her head, and says, No, child, no. You can't keep your house ready for sale with three monsters kids, and write a novel in a month.

Sigh.

It's pretty sad stuff.

But then... I found this beautiful idea.

NaNoLoMo! (National Novel Loving Month. Brilliant right?) Here's the official facebook page.

Instead of writing a novel in a month,  NaNoLoMo's write 30 reviews of books they loved in places like Amazon,  goodreads, or Smashwords. One review a day. Not too bad, unless your reviews end up 1227 words, (I do wax verbose, but really, I'm not thinking that verbose).

I love this idea, because it's all about sharing the love of books. I'm planning on reviewing mostly self-published books, where every review adds up, and helps, and...more than likely...the author themselves will read my positive review.

Reviews have become crucial to the success of a book, especially a self-published book. We live in such a web-based world that you can't buy socks without reading a review. And with the anonymity of the internet, and all those trolls hiding around ready to destroy just because they can, it's nice to be a part of a movement for positiveness. I choose my eBooks based on reviews. Why not add my voice to that discussion?

Just to get your reviewing creative juices flowing, here are the 26 best amazon reviews of all time.

Because no one ever said that you couldn't be a nice troll.

  1. That's a fantastic idea! It sounds like a lot of fun, and I love how you are going to review self published books. What a great way to help other writers out. :)

  2. That's a great idea, Sheena, and I love the title of your post. :) There's a NaBloPoMo (National Blogging Post Month) that I've always thought sounded fun, but this is very tempting.

I don't know where you're going to post all these reviews, but I think it would be great if you would post (or re-post) them on The Prosers Read...not that we have many followers yet, but...

  3. I have always loved that song and now I've been singing it for HOURS. At least it's not a bad earworm to have ;)

I tend to shy away from reviews because so many people write such LONG ones and then I just don't have that much to say, and it becomes a bigger deal than it needs to be. This might be a good reminder that a paragraph review is better than none (and some people, like me, might even prefer reading short reviews).

    1. I agree Sarah. Those long reviews seem to be more of rants than reviews IMO, and they always contain spoilers. So I read the reviews on goodreads after I read the book to see if I agree with the complaints.

  4. Love the title of this post, and the post itself is pretty awesome too. :)

I haven't heard of NaNoLoMo. Thanks for sharing, and please leave links to your reviews. :)

  5. Oh man, I'm such a fan of those joke amazon reviews. I was actually trying to show my friend the Tuscan Whole Milk reviews and discovered the Uranium Ore ones. We laughed about the half empty review for a long time (science nerds!) but my second favorite one was this:

"Picked this up for use in one of my kid's 'diversity' projects in school (Great Success!), and stuck the leftovers in the cabinet next to the baking soda.

Ran out of toothpaste, and remembered how you're supposed to be able to use baking soda to clean your teeth, so of course, I accidentally used this instead, and Wow! all I can say is, my teeth have never been cleaner! They sparkle, they tingle, and for some reason, they STAY clean now, no matter what. Highly recommended!

However, when I ran out of that fire-ant killer powder stuff, I figured I would try some for that too.

    Big mistake!

Boy, it sure did not kill those ants!

Fortunately, those suckers get slower as they get bigger, so I have been able to use a shovel to take care of most of them, one at a time though, the sneaky devils.

And the darn trash man refuses to take them away..

I would have given this product 5 stars for the teeth and the project on embracing diversity, but I deducted one star because of the giant mutant ants. "

As a bonus, many of the websites I visit now have ads for Uranium Ore. /sigh. I expect a visit from the FBI any day.
