Love Triangles and a Giveaway

I love a good love triangle in a story. Don't get me wrong. There are plenty of bad love triangles out there.

(Raven Boys, I am looking at you.)
(No I'm not. Gossip Girl, I'm looking at you.)

But when a love triangle is done correctly, it thrills me to the core. I'm reading such a book right now. But I can't tell you what it is. Sorry.

Here are my Top 10 Favorite Love Triangles, in no particular order:

book 1. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. Not the movie. The movie only bears a passing resemblance to the book. But the love triangle (or quadrangle, possibly octangle) between Jace, Clary and Simon was fantastic. It isn't my favorite love triangle of all time, but it is the one that always springs to mind when people start talking love triangles, so Cassandra Clare must have done something right. Simon has been in love with Clary forever, and he is her best friend. However, against her better judgment, Clary is in love with Jace. It is heartwrenching, because Simon is never truly in the running, either with Clary or with the reader, but you love him anyway.

book AND movie: 2. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Darcy, Wickham and Elizabeth.

book AND movie 3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Peeta, Gale and Katniss. In my mind there was never any doubt who Katniss would end up with if I was writing the story. But Suzanne Collins kept me waiting until the bitter end to find out that I WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG.

TV show: 4. Chuck: Chuck, Bryce Larkin and Sarah. With someone like Bryce Larking around, how could Sarah ever even see Chuck Bartowski?

TV show 5. Veronica Mars: Veronica, Logan and Duncan. This is a classic love lambda. Logan and Duncan are best friends in love with the same girl. However, Veronica, Logan and Piz was a perfect example of the love triangle done wrong.

TV show 6. Felicity: Ben, Noel and Felicity.

book AND movie 7. Harry Potter by JK Rowling: Harry, Ron and Hermione. You'll have to look at Sheena's brilliant post for more information here, but when an author does everything in her power to prevent a love triangle and yet millions of readers still see one...that's powerful stuff.

song 8. You Belong To Me by Taylor Swift. Quite possibly the best love triangle EVER.

movie AND book: 9. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. MaryAnn Dashwood, Willoughby and Colonel Brandon

TV show 10. and a love triangle that's in my heart but that we never really got to see to the end: Jane By Design: Eli, Jane and Billy

  1. I loved the triangles in Sense and Sensibility and The Hunger Games.

  2. Love triangles drive me bananas! I get so mad at them. I find that when the author doesn't force one, I'm so much happier. It's like for some authors the only hindrance to a love storyline they can think of is the "who should she choose" one (and it's usually done that way - a girl with two potential partners. I can't think of one w/a boy at the center of the triangle.) I find them frustrating, it's funny that you've ranked them!
